When faced with the realities of climate change, it’s easy to see it as a problem too big for us to overcome. After all, what difference can one person make when there are corporations all over the world still burning fossil fuels at an incredible rate? With so much pollution created by these actions, what impact can reducing our carbon footprint have in the grand scheme of things? It’s certainly a discouraging thought, but there are ways that sustainable living really can make an impact on the world.
While it’s difficult to understand how you can make a difference by buying local produce, buying a re-usable cup, and diligently recycling when your bestie has just bought a new 4x4, every small action does build up. Our individual carbon footprint is enormous, and so we should all be doing our best to reduce this as much as we can. Humans are very social creatures, and we tend to take cues from those closest to us. You might not be an Instagram sensation, but when it comes to lifestyle, everyone’s an influencer. By following an eco-friendlier lifestyle, you’ll be influencing others to do the same, whether you mean to our not. This has a domino effect, and before you know it one person’s influence has spread far and wide. While one person on their own might not be enough to stop climate change, you need to prove that there are ways to be sustainable, instead of brushing the issue under the rug. By doing this, you can be the person that encourages others. Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and this has never been truer than for sustainable living.
Our sphere of influence doesn’t stop there. Companies are affected by current trends, and so if they see that the world wants more environmentally friendly, sustainable products, that’s what will become available. This makes it even easier for people to make the right lifestyle choices, and so the cycle continues. Some major corporations are trying to reduce their emissions and change from plastic to cardboard packaging – all due to the influence their customers have. If enough people want change, then companies will have to comply. The same goes for the government. The more it’s shown to be what the people want, the harder it will be to refuse new legislation.
While there’s still a long way to go, living sustainably isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for you as well. Trying to do our bit to reduce plastic waste and supporting companies with sustainability at heart can help. It also gives us peace of mind that we are doing what we can, instead of feeling guilty every-time we buy another plastic water bottle. With so many sustainable products out there, it’s easy to make the switch both at home and at work, and you might even inspire someone else along the way!
